According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), a non-departmental public body responsible for the regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare, the total number of working days lost due to stress, depression or anxiety was 11.3 million in 2013/14. Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies explains that this costs Britain £70-100bn annually, which is equivalent to 4.5% of the nation’s GDP.

As someone who knows full well the stresses and strains of working in the city in a high-pressured environment with little or no free time, I can wholly appreciate that people’s wellbeing can take a backseat when you’re busy. My experience of the corporate life meant I barely had 15 minutes to eat lunch at my desk, had days where I rarely saw daylight (especially in the winter) and when I had the energy or time to exercise, it would consist of a polluted pounding of the pavements to get home (which eventually took it’s toll on my hips!)

I started Well Aware to help time-poor people regain that precious life balance that is so often lost in today’s world. Well Aware gives you back your time. We listen to our clients’ needs then take away the stress of having to research the best studios, trainers, yoga teachers and so on, at suitable locations. We then arrange everything so all they have to do is turn up. We also provide constant support so that if our clients have an off day (which we all do), they can still find the motivation to make that workout.

We try and educate our clients to schedule in workouts like you would a meeting at work. More often than not if we are not held accountable to anyone else, we will cancel or make an excuse. We help encourage them to make the necessary steps to make positive, long-term lifestyle changes.

As some people can only find time for working out at the weekends, making simple tweaks to one’s diet can have a huge impact on a person’s wellbeing. We work with a number of leading performance nutritionists who design bespoke nutrition plans catered to our client’s individual needs, taking into consideration days when they are more sedentary and don’t have time to exercise.

We have seen a great success with this, with one of our client’s losing 11 pounds in 5 weeks after diligently following her plan. Her activity levels were unchanged from prior to starting the plan. Instead she learnt to regularly fuel her body to ensure she was never hungry and therefore never craved sugary, processed food.

At Well Aware, we work with a small proportion of time-poor people who feel it is necessary to invest in their health and wellbeing. We want to make this a large-scale operation, making our services accessible at a corporate level as well as to the masses and whilst it may seem like a premium service, we will always work towards our client’s budget and like to live by the mantra that “illness is more expensive than wellness.” Invest in your body; it is the only place you have to live.
